WHAT IS GELATO ARTIGIANALE?
One may not know this, but ice cream was invented in Italy. It goes backto the days of Nero when they would bring snow down from the mountains and add a flavor to it. Icecream was first introduced to France when Catherine de' Medici married Henry ll of France and brought with her all the Italian chefs, that's how it was introduced to the French Court. The first ice cream store opened in 1600 in Italy and in 1670 Café Procopo opened in France which sold and still today is selling Italian ice cream. Italy has always been and is currently the leader in creating some of the finest frozen dessert machinery, Gelato bases, flavors, and many more!
If one were to look in an Italian dictionary, they would see that the word, "Gelato" traslated into English means ice cream. The traslation is not entirely accurate as in the U.S., one would have to follow codes such a minimum requirement of 10% butterfat to be called ice cream.
The correct translation is "frozen dessert" and Gelato has no code to follow which can allow someone to create his or her own "Gelato Artigianale".
